Selling your soul: Reading for cash Pt 2

Pt 2. Other Peoples Issues.

Here, I’m going to look at a few of the reasons that people assume that to charge for using a spiritual gift or talent is wrong. A few people may find themselves uncomfortable with what is written here as it may be a little close to the truth.

The first reason is that, for many folks at least, there needs to be a belief that there is a big gap between the spiritual and the mundane. If you are trading something spiritual, like guidance for something mundane like money, the belief goes, then you are somehow sullying it. I can tell you now that this simply isn’t true.

What bothers me is that so many people insist that there MUST be such a huge gap between the spiritual and the non-spiritual. The most spiritual people are the ones that draw their spirituality into their everyday lives, not those that demand that separation be there. For many people though, the gap is enforced so that the spiritual can be protected from the mundane and keep it mysterious and, for want of a better phrase, “special.” It’s that specialness that is exactly why so many want to keep the gap there.

Being in touch with their spirituality makes these people feel special and having somebody not only able to connect with their spiritual gifts, but also profiting from them means that maybe that specialness might not be as far away from everything as these “spiritual” people would like. The second reason is simply the stupid belief that money is somehow evil. Money is a tool, nothing more. Part of the reason for this belief is a misquotation. People quote the line as “money is the root of all evil.” The line actually goes that “the love of money is the root of all evil.” The line is from the Holy Bible ( KJV, 1 Timothy 6:10). Money itself has no inherent power until people start to want it,  which brings me to the other part of the reason. Because of the inflated opinion of money’s power, people crave it as a way to control their environments and the people around them.

Even then, it is the same as anything that people want. It can make them bastards and who will try to take what’s yours, or they can reach for further heights and do the best damned job that they can. Anything can be a two edged sword, even perception.

There was something that I touched on in part one, but I thought it needed to be cemented here. People that live in fear of money controlling them are already being controlled. Don’t be one of them. If you’re going to read for cash, don’t. If, however, you’re going to do something you love and get paid for it, you have my blessing and more importantly, your own.
